One surprising thing was that certain drawers were not very deep at all, but there were deeper drawers to compensate. A loveseat had plenty of space for sitting with a small coffee table in front of it. Above the loveseat were cabinets that, for a shorter person, were a bit hard to access. Inside the stateroom, I found everything that I would need for a comfortable week-long stay. Light woods, some whites, and some pops of color — like in the balcony drapes — kept the room from feeling too plain. It’s a classic “big” ship with lots of amenities and programs (including a casino and art auctions). As for the Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam, after summering in Europe, the ships return to their Fort Lauderdale home port in November for a winter season of Caribbean cruises. The newer ships with more amenities (like the Pinnacle Class ships) stick mainly to Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. As well, HAL has a supervised youth activities program called Club HAL for kids and teens aged three to 17.
Rather than feeling like a traditional stateroom, the cabins feel more like a high-end hotel experience. As expected, there are all the stateroom classes you’d find on modern ships including Balcony / Verandah cabins, Ocean view cabins, inside cabins, and a variety of suites. There are the expected Pool Bars which include the bar at the Lido Pool (Lido Bar), outdoor bars (Panorama Bar & Sea View Bar) as well as the Retreat which is a private space for paying guests only. Interestingly enough, these bars don’t have the same vibe and aren’t the same gathering spots you’d find on other cruise ships.
The food was certainly “passable,” but not as good as the dining room on the Princess cruise I had gone on in September. And for older seasoned travelers, HAL offers great value for money. As other Holland America Line reviews also indicate, the Pinnacle Class ships, especially, are perfect for multi-generational families cruising together.
(D, C, CQ, E, F, FA, FB, OO) Oceanview staterooms, and (I, IQ, J, K, L, N) Inside cabins have 2 lower beds convertible to a Queen-size double bed, bathroom (WC/shower). Our Rotterdam traveling companions (who’ve cruised on NCL, Princess, Celebrity and other lines) also remarked many times how really good the food was – especially in the ship’s specialty restaurants. Unfortunately, my slice of pizza looked (and tasted) like it had been under a heat lamp for hours. Relax in Holland America's greenhouse spa, salon, fitness center and fitness classes.
An additional plus is that room service is complimentary (unless ordering specific a la carte priced items), with courses delivered punctually and, when applicable, piping hot. Cabins to avoid would be at the very top and forward part of the ship for those with motion sickness issues and cabins in the forward to midships portion of Deck 1 to avoid noise from late night performances in the Music Walk, which is directly above. Also, as noted on the deck plan, VH Category Verandah Staterooms on Deck 4 have views that are obstructed by the lifeboats. The top level of the double deck World Stage theater begins a line-up of public areas on Deck 3 that includes a full wraparound promenade, which was enjoyed immensely on sea days and before and after dinner, weather permitting.
