The Lyric Opera of Chicago has made the opulent venue its home since 1954, presenting eight productions each season. Each season at the Lyric offers something different, including reimagined productions of classic operas like Faust and Richard Wagner’s Ring cyle. The Civic Opera Building remains the home of Lyric Opera of Chicago. In 1993, the company purchased the theater and backstage space and began extensive renovations, including refurbishing the seats for the first time ever.

The Civic Opera Building is a majestic limestone skyscraper with a 45-story office tower and two 22-story wings. Shaped like a gigantic throne facing the Chicago River between Washington and Madison streets, it was completed after just 22 months of planning and construction. The writing was on the wall for the grand ole opera house and its last day of operation came May 15, 1927. The beautiful edifice was torn down later that year when Court Street was extended from D Street through to the new courthouse on Arrowhead Avenue.
